Lets Power Smarter, Arizona!

In the midst of an affordability crisis, utilities in Arizona are proposing a 14 percent rate hike to generate billions more in profits at a time when their customers are struggling to pay their bills.

Join us in calling on the Arizona Corporation Commission to reject APS and TEP’s massive overreach, and focus on lowering energy costs for Arizona residents and families.

Whats the stats from AZ right now?

  • These proposals come after customers were saddled with two other big rate hikes in just the last five years.

  • Electric bills could rise by an additional 14% under the proposal—an estimated increase of more than $240/year for the average APS customer, and $196/year for a TEP ratepayer.

  • If the Arizona Corporation Commission gives the okay, these companies will lock in higher rates far into the future.

What we're doing in Arizona right now

CR’s work in Arizona is part of a broader energy affordability initiative, which is mobilizing consumers nationwide to advocate for fair utility policies as electricity costs continue to rise. Through petitions, consumer storytelling, research, and policy advocacy, CR is working to ensure that households—not just utilities and the technology industry—have a meaningful voice in decisions that determine who pays for America’s rapidly expanding electric grid.

As utilities across the country seek approval for billions of dollars in new infrastructure investments, CR is expanding its work with consumers, policymakers, and advocates in multiple states to promote affordable electricity, fair cost allocation, and greater accountability in utility and data center regulation.

Stories from Arizona

These are stories from Consumers in AZ struggling with higher higher energy costs

“In order to save on electric bills, I use the saver program with APS. This means I try not to use my air conditioner between 4-7 PM. In order to accomplish this, my house runs between 80-83 degrees in this time period. I have over the required amount of insulation in the walls and roof. I installed attic fans to reduce the heat in the attic. I have done everything I can do to keep from using electricity so as not to use electricity during the peak hours when electricity costs substantially more."

“My last bill was $284.03. Our current income is slightly over $1,000 a month and our rent is $1,050 a month--do the math. Due to our low income, we received an energy support discount of $165 for that same month and we still had to use our credit card to pay the remaining $143.02. ... As it is, we are forced to seek monthly food assistance from our community food bank because our means are gravely limited. I don't know what excuses the APS company is using to justify more rate increases but this...this is inhumane”

“Being a senior citizen with limited income it would mean making some budget changes. Like deciding what medications we can do without. My hubby has had a stroke and A/C is a necessity not a choice. APS doesn't need more money they need a better budget"
