Lead has no place in the cosmetics and personal care products we use on our bodies. This heavy metal, a known neurotoxin that damages the brain and nervous system, has no safe levels of exposure. So it’s alarming that recent investigations have uncovered high levels of lead in synthetic braiding hair and certain eyeliners - popular beauty products widely available in the marketplace, often used by communities of color, including children.
The FDA's role is critical in protecting Americans from unnecessary lead exposure. Join us in calling on the agency to use its full authority to keep dangerous beauty and personal care products that contain lead off the market, and ensure rigorous safety standards are met for every product sold to the public. Sign the petition now and let’s get lead out of personal care and beauty products.
Petition to the FDA:
We urge the FDA to take immediate action regarding the presence of lead in beauty and personal care products sold in the U.S. marketplace. Given the recent findings of high lead levels in both braiding hair and certain eyeliners—often used by vulnerable populations, including children—it is unacceptable that these products continue to be sold to consumers with seemingly little oversight or regulation.
Lead is a neurotoxin with no safe level of exposure, and its presence in cosmetics and beauty products poses a serious public health risk. We call on the FDA to prioritize consumer safety by immediately increasing marketplace monitoring, actively enforcing existing regulations against illegal color additives, and taking concrete steps to prevent products containing unsafe levels of lead from reaching consumers.
