Consumer Reports New York Policy Agenda
An open letter to our New York Elected Officials
As a Consumer Reports member, I join the call for Gov Hochul, Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and our Assembly Members and Senators to enact pro-consumer legislation that promotes health, safety, digital privacy, financial fairness, and sustainability. I ask you to take immediate action to pass these seven urgent priorities that would secure strongest-in-the-nation protections for consumer privacy, product safety, and financial fairness, including:
-
Enacting the Beauty Justice Act to ban the sale of personal care and beauty products containing intentionally added toxic chemicals.
-
Ensuring Safer School Meals by banning seven synthetic dyes—including Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1—from foods served in New York public schools.
-
Tackling Energy Affordability by supporting the Governor’s “Ratepayer Protection Plan” to keep bills under control by modernizing utility regulations and eliminating “gold-plated” rate cases.
-
Stabilizing Homeowners Insurance to curb rising home insurance costs and ensure transparency about how our premiums are determined and to offer guaranteed discounts for homeowners who mitigate risks.
-
Passing Comprehensive Privacy Legislation and Ban Surveillance Pricing to minimize data collection, requires universal opt-outs, and reins in the data brokers who profit from our private lives and use our personal data to set individual prices.
-
Securing “Zombie” Devices that open doors for hackers and require manufacturers to disclose exactly how long a device will be supported with security updates.
-
Strengthening New York’s Consumer Law to better protect individual consumers—by making it easier to bring cases, increasing penalties and damages, and removing court rules that unfairly raise the bar for consumers.
