Tell Governor Hochul: Protect New York Consumers

By submitting this form, I agree to the terms of Consumer Reports' Privacy Policy and User Agreement.

Thanks to the action of thousands of New Yorkers who went to Albany, sent letters, and made phone calls, the legislature took bold steps to hold corporations accountable and put people over profits. This session, we passed critical protections for our health, safety, and finances. These measures:

  • Protect our health by regulating toxic substances in our food and testing baby food and infant formula for dangerous heavy metals.

  • Secure our finances by cracking down on predatory debt collection, ending unfair surveillance pricing, and bringing much-needed transparency to insurance rates.

These are common-sense solutions that will make New York a more affordable, transparent, and safer place to live. Urge Governor Hochul to sign these bills into law immediately and make these protections a reality.

A Message to Governor Hochul

As New Yorkers and strong supporters of consumer protection, we urge you to sign the recently passed legislative package that will significantly improve the health, safety, and affordability of our state.

This session, our legislature took bold steps to hold corporations accountable and put people over profits. We ask that you take swift action to sign these important measures into law:

  • Baby Food Safety and Transparency Act (A9026/S8701): Mandates the testing of baby food for toxic heavy metals and requires the public disclosure of these test results.

  • GRAS Bill (S1239F/A1556G): Prohibits certain food additives and food color additives and establishes requirements for the reporting of GRAS (generally recognized as safe) substances.

  • Surveillance Pricing (A9349B/S8643B): Prohibits the use of algorithms that cause price inflation for consumers.

  • Consumer Debt Uniformity Act (A10182/S9760): Extends consumer protection rules, established under the Consumer Credit Fairness Act, to all consumer debt transactions, including a three-year statute of limitations and the requirement for plaintiffs to provide proof of debt ownership.

  • Private Education Loans Protection Act (A 4922B/S5598A): Creates baseline consumer protections for student borrowers of private education loans and their co-signers (primarily seniors).

These measures are common-sense solutions that will make New York a more affordable, transparent, and safer place to live. Please do not let industry opposition stand in the way of progress. I urge you to sign these bills into law immediately and continue your commitment to protecting all New Yorkers.
