In the midst of an affordability crisis, North Carolina’s Duke Energy is proposing a 15 percent rate hike to generate hundreds of millions more in profits at a time when hundreds of thousands of its customers are unable to pay their bills.

Join us in calling on the North Carolina Utilities Commission to reject Duke’s massive overreach, and focus on lowering energy costs for North Carolina residents and families.

To the North Carolina Utilities Commission:
We urge the North Carolina Utilities Commission to limit Duke Energy's proposal to raise rates for North Carolina residents, and challenge Duke's return on equity expectations. Duke Energy, after reporting nearly $5 billion in net income last year, is asking for one of the highest rates of guaranteed profit in the country.

As Duke makes new promises on grid reliability, it is backtracking on earlier commitments to developing new sources of clean, affordable energy, and instead investing in gas-burning facilities to bring new data centers online for Big Tech. And under the state’s current system, these costs will be passed directly to Duke’s customers. With hundreds of thousands of Duke customers at risk of losing their service because they can’t pay their bills, now is not the time to raise rates on ratepayers.
