Formula is an essential source of nutrition for millions of infants, and it’s absolutely crucial that the formula we give our babies is nutritious and safe. But Consumer Reports’ latest testing of infant formulas found concerning levels of contaminants such as lead and arsenic in 26 of the 49 products we tested. Many formulas were found to be safer choices, showing that contamination is not inevitable — and stronger safeguards are possible.
One year ago, the FDA launched Operation Stork Speed, promising to improve oversight and increase testing and safety of infant formula. But the U.S. still lacks any enforceable heavy metal standards to protect babies from these dangerous contaminants in formula. We urge the FDA to fully implement Operation Stork Speed by establishing enforceable heavy metal limits and regularly testing formula for contaminants. Message to the FDA
For many infants, formula is their sole source of nutrition, and for other babies it’s supplemental. Ensuring it is free from dangerous levels of heavy metals and other contaminants must be a top public health priority, because of the health dangers these contaminants pose to growing babies. Yet a new round of Consumer Reports’ testing has found 26 of the 49 infant formulas examined contain arsenic at or above CR’s level of concern, and elevated levels of lead in three powdered formulas. These findings point to an urgent need for stronger, enforceable safeguards.
One year ago, the FDA launched Operation Stork Speed to strengthen oversight and increase testing of infant formula in order to protect infants and restore public confidence. We call on the FDA to deliver on its promise of safer infant formula by: establishing enforceable, health-protective federal limits for heavy metals; regularly testing for contaminants; and holding manufacturers accountable when products exceed established limits. It’s time for Stork Speed to deliver, and establish strong, enforceable protections that all babies — and all parents — can rely on.
