American consumers have been able to purchase increasingly efficient household appliances over the last several decades, using less water and energy that ultimately saves big money on utility bills. The driving force behind improvements to our washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators and other appliances has been strong energy and water efficiency standards established by the Department of Energy (DOE).
A typical American household saves $576 per year because of these standards, but a new series of regulations from the DOE would reverse this money-saving trend by rolling back these pro-consumer measures. Attacks against the efficiency of our appliances are attacks on our utility bills, and our health. Less efficient appliances will result in higher water and energy costs, while contributing more waste and pollution into our communities and environment.
Join Consumer Reports in urging the Department of Energy to reverse its misguided attack on appliance efficiency standards and work to strengthen, rather than weaken measures that will collectively save consumers over $1 trillion dollars in the next 30 years.
To the Department of Energy:
I urge you to withdraw all proposals that roll back appliance efficiency standards. American consumers saved over $100 billion on their energy bills in 2024 alone as a result of standards that have been implemented and continuously improved since 1987. The typical family in the US saved over $500 on their energy and water bills last year because of these standards.
An attack on appliance efficiency standards is an attack on consumers’ wallets and utility bills. These standards enjoy wide, bipartisan consumer support – with 87% of Americans supporting minimum energy efficiency standards for appliances in a nationally representative March 2025 Consumer Reports survey. Rather than systematically weakening our existing standards, I urge the Department of Energy to engage with consumers and consumer advocacy organizations to strengthen appliance efficiency so consumers like me can save more money.
