Industry must be held accountable for removing toxic dyes

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s directive to food manufacturers to phase out eight toxic dyes is a good step toward safer food for your family. But it leaves it to the massive food industry to police itself on phasing out toxic dyes, relying on companies to act voluntarily after years of resistance to ending the use of synthetic dyes in foods sold in the U.S. These dangerous dyes are also found in many medications.
We need an enforceable, time-bound ban on harmful synthetic dyes so that consumers can trust that all companies will be held accountable for getting these chemicals out of our food and drugs. Join us in calling on the Department of Health and Human Services to establish an enforceable ban on synthetic dyes now.
Message to Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
We call on the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a mandatory ban on synthetic dyes in food and drugs. Your latest initiative to food manufacturers to remove eight toxic dyes from our food supply is a good step, but because it is purely voluntary, relies on compliance from companies that have long resisted phasing out synthetic dyes from food sold in the U.S.
Dyes are found in thousands of food, beverage and drug products and have been linked to neurobehavioral issues and other health impacts, especially in children. The new initiative, a multistep plan that relies on voluntary industry efforts, will simply prolong the amount of time it will take to get dangerous dyes out of our food. Consumers shouldn’t have to wait and rely on this industry to act voluntarily.
Please take action to establish a mandatory ban on all synthetic dyes in food and drugs so consumers can trust that companies will be held accountable for getting these toxins out of our food.
