Demand automakers stop sharing your driving habits
Sign The Petition
A new Consumer Reports investigation has found that many automakers share your driving data – from where you go and how fast you’re driving, to how hard you brake and more – with data brokers. And these data brokers often sell your driving habits to insurance companies – sometimes without your knowledge – who can use it to hike premiums, or deny coverage altogether.
We can use our consumer power to get car companies to stop this invasion of your privacy. The Federal Trade Commission has already cracked down on General Motors to stop sharing driver data after thousands of you spoke out and pushed them to investigate all automakers. Now, we need every automaker to do the same, and publicly commit to stop sharing your driving data with data brokers and publicly list all the third-party companies they share your data with.
To: BMW, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Stellantis, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen
I urge you to immediately stop sharing my sensitive driving location data and driving habits with data brokers, who profit from selling my information to insurance companies and others who can use it against me, and publicly list all the third-party companies you do share data with. Even if your company discloses data broker sharing agreements in your terms and conditions or privacy policy, that doesn’t mean these documents gave me a meaningful sense of what happens to my most sensitive information. In light of the Federal Trade Commission’s settlement with General Motors and OnStar ordering the companies to sharply limit the sharing of driving data and enhance transparency of who has access to this data, I urge your company to do the same, and publicly commit to stop sharing my personal data with data brokers and disclose the other companies you share my data with.
