Because of our complex medical billing and insurance reimbursement system, many consumers often have medical debt that is inaccurate, under dispute – or even flat-out wrong. Yet a loophole in federal law allows credit agencies to report that debt to banks and lenders, making it much more costly, or even impossible, for people to get loans or credit.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants to close that loophole, and prohibit lenders from making credit decisions about you based on medical information. We’re up against the debt collection industry who wants to use every tactic to make money, so let's show the CFPB Americans want this pro-consumer rule.
Petition to Consumer Fianancial Protection Bureau
We support the CFPB’s proposed rule that would remove medical bills from most credit reports, increase privacy protections, help to increase credit scores and loan approvals, and prevent debt collectors from using the credit reporting system to coerce people to pay. Because of our complex insurance reimbursement system, medical debt is often inaccurate or inflated – or isn’t even owed by the consumer, so no one should be denied credit based on medical information.
