Consumer products used to be built to last. But these days so many electronics – from smartphones to TVs to computers – seem to be built to be replaced. And many manufacturers limit the usability of your electronics by ending software support, forcing you to buy an upgraded version of the product.

Together we can change that! Join Consumer Reports, PIRG, and iFixit in calling on the Federal Trade Commission to set strong rules that extend the life of our electronic products by preventing manufacturers from creating restrictions that keep us from repairing or using our products.

To: Federal Trade Commission

We are calling on you to set strong pro-consumer rules that extend the life of our electronic products by preventing manufacturers from creating restrictions that stop us from repairing or using our products. This would include:

  • Developing a repairability score that consumers could use to shop for the most reliable products, as well as incentivize manufacturers to create products with repairability in mind
  • Restricting manufacturers’ exclusivity of parts that are necessary for repairs
  • Requiring transparency on how long manufacturers will support a product’s software and providing alternatives when software support ends

These and other rules would help us use our products for as long as possible, helping our pocketbooks as well as protecting our environment from unnecessary electronic waste.
