Lets Power Smarter, Michigan!
In the midst of an affordability crisis, utilities in Michigan are proposing an over 9% rate hike to generate hundreds of millions more in profits at a time when their customers are struggling to pay their bills.
Michigan families deserve affordable, reliable electricity, not another round of excessive rate hikes. Add your name to urge the Michigan Public Service Commission to reject these excessive rate increases and prioritize affordable, reliable energy for Michigan families.
What are the stats from MI right now?
-
Michigan electricity prices have risen 17% over the past three years.
-
Electric bills could rise by more than 9% under both proposals—an estimated $155-180 more per year for a typical customer.
-
Michigan utilities can request rates increases from state regulators as often as every 12 months, and repeated requests have become commonplace.
What we're doing in Michigan right now
CR’s work in Michigan is part of Power Smarter, a broader energy
affordability initiative that's mobilizing consumers nationwide to
advocate for fair utility policies as electricity costs continue to
rise. Through petitions, consumer storytelling, research, and policy
advocacy, CR is working to ensure that households, not just
utilities and the technology industry, have a meaningful voice in
decisions that determine who pays for America’s rapidly expanding
electric grid.
As utilities across the country seek approval
for billions of dollars in new infrastructure investments, CR is
expanding its work with consumers, policymakers, and advocates in
multiple states to promote affordable electricity, fair cost
allocation, and greater accountability in utility and data center
regulation.
Stories from Michigan
These are stories from consumers in MI struggling with higher higher energy costs
“It's hard to even buy groceries these days or put gas in
your car. Why is okay for people who are making billions in
profits to continue to gouge the little guy? Enough is
enough!!!"
-Catherine, MI
"I wasn't able to get into my own home until my 40s and am still struggling to hold on. As a single, childless individual it amazes me that I struggle to keep up with bills when I live nothing approaching a lavish lifestyle. It's an entire landscape of issues that has worked against my generation and it's outrageous that basic necessities want to press us even further for pennies into their own pockets."
-Michael, MI
“I have a home in Florida as well as Michigan. I try harder
to conserve in Michigan and yet, my utilities are twice as
high in Michigan compared to Florida! Why!? And Consumers is
requesting a 9% increase! You’re kidding me!? Lower our
bills with your profits! What about these wind turbines and
solar panels to lower our bills! You pay for all of this,
utilities!"
-Stephen, MI
