Food Label Mission

Complete within two weeks

Our personal and environmental health hinges on our food choices. But if our food labels aren't accurate, how can we possibly make smart choices? That's why we're on a mission to discover the most confusing, misleading, or even downright outlandish food labels.

Watch this 3-minute video to learn all about this project, and how to get started:

Or if you just want to get started, follow these steps:

Step 1: Take a picture of a confusing food label

Next time you're in the grocery store, pay special attention to the food labels. Do they make sense, or seem unbelievable? Take a picture with your smartphone or camera of the front, back and sides of the product, including any nutritional information labels. (Make sure to download and print out the food label guide using the link in the mission toolkit before you head to the store.)

Step 2: Record the details

On your phone or a notepad, make a note of the following:

  • Location of the store
  • Date and time of photo
  • Brand name of product
  • Why you think the label is misleading

Step 3: Report back

Fill out the Submission Form with the information you've recorded and your photos. Don't forget to share why you think this labeling claim may be misleading!

Step 4: Be a part of the discussion!

Our food label experts (and other volunteers) will discuss and share insights about what you and others are finding in the marketplace. You can read what we've found so far here.

You can also bookmark this page so you can come back to check the directions or access the toolkit and submission form. Stay tuned for emails from us with updates, reminders and more! You can complete as many food label missions as you'd like over the next two weeks.
