Over the past seven weeks, 58 people in the U.S. and Canada have become ill from a dangerous strain of E. coli bacteria, likely from eating romaine lettuce. Five people in the U.S. have been hospitalized and one has died, according to officials. There has also been one death in Canada. For now, Consumer Reports experts are recommending that everyone avoid this popular lettuce.

It's not enough for the FDA to say the outbreak is under investigation and leave it at that. The FDA should use the information it has on hand to advise consumers on how to protect themselves.
