We need a strong FDA to ensure food safety

Tens of millions of Americans are sickened every year by foodborne bacteria such as listeria, salmonella and E. coli, and the number of food recalls is on the rise. Consumer Reports’ latest analysis of the riskiest foods points to household staples that have been linked to serious illness outbreaks and even deaths caused by bacterial contamination.
What’s more concerning: the FDA, one of the key government agencies that oversees the safety of our food supply, recently announced staff layoffs and budget cuts that make it difficult for regulators to perform inspections and other oversight functions.
An under-staffed and under-resourced FDA jeopardizes the agency’s ability to protect our food system, and puts lives at risk. Take action now by calling on the current Administration to maintain the FDA staffing and resources needed to ensure that our food supply is safe.
Message to Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.:
We call on the Department of Health and Human Services to support the FDA with the resources and staffing necessary to ensure the safety of our food supply. The agency states that it’s committed to strengthening its oversight of our food supply - but recent cuts and layoffs to FDA staff that specialize in food safety jeopardizes the agency’s ability to protect our food system, and puts lives at risk.
A recent Consumer Reports’ analysis of the riskiest foods on the market reveals household staples like fruits and vegetables that have been linked to massive recalls and serious illness outbreaks caused by bacteria including salmonella, E.coli and listeria. An under-staffed and under-resourced FDA is ill-equipped to investigate these and other dangers that can cause illnesses, hospitalizations and even death. Please ensure that the FDA maintains the staff and resources that it needs to oversee the safety of our food supply.
