As large SUVs and pickup trucks on our roads get bigger and become more prevalent, so does the risk to others who share the roads with them. This is happening at a time when pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed 83 percent since 2009.

CR has been advocating for safer vehicle designs that would help drivers see pedestrians and make collisions less deadly when they do occur. Now, policymakers are taking action. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just proposed a new rule that would impose new standards aimed at reducing the severity of pedestrian collisions – particularly when a person suffers an impact to their head or upper body. The proposal could lead automakers to modify the front design of some vehicles, particularly large pickups and SUVs, to meet the new standards.

Sign our petition to show support for these new standards and urge the government to protect everyone on our roads – not just those inside the vehicle.

PETITION TO NHTSA

The number of pedestrian deaths has surged by 83 percent since 2009. I strongly support NHTSA’s efforts to help create safer vehicles with pedestrians in mind. Setting head-to-hood impact requirements will help prevent life-threatening injuries. I urge NHTSA to implement this rule and other measures that protect everyone on our roads, regardless of how they travel.
