A new Consumer Reports investigation has found that some off-brand types of video doorbell cameras sold on Amazon, Walmart, Shein and Sears online marketplaces have gaping security holes that could allow someone to easily capture snapshots from the video feed, or even take control of the device and watch family members come and go – illustrating how the devices could be turned into a tool for stalkers, harassers, or burglars.

We are calling on the FTC to take immediate action to remove from online marketplaces unsafe video doorbell cameras that put consumers’ safety at risk. A new investigation from Consumer Reports found that Amazon, Walmart, Shein, and Sears online marketplaces sold at least 10 different doorbell brands owned by a Chinese-based company, Eken Group Ltd., with security flaws that could allow someone to easily capture snapshots from the video feed, or even take control of the device and watch family members come and go. These flaws put consumers at great risk from stalkers, harassers or burglars or other harmful actors.
We urge the FTC to use its authority under Section 5 of the FTC Act, and take immediate action to remove these unsafe doorbell cameras from the marketplace.
