Tell FTC: Set strong rules to rein in data sharing

A new CR study has found that the average study participant had their data shared to Facebook by 2,230 companies – not only a person’s online activity, but what they do offline as well: places visited, events attended, products ordered, and so on. Facebook and other platforms use this data to create profiles to target consumers with advertisements – but this sensitive information held by thousands of companies is at risk of not only a security breach, but also could be inaccurate and used in discriminatory ways.
It’s time to strictly limit companies’ access to our most personal, private information. Join us in calling on federal regulators to set strong rules on what companies are and aren't allowed to do with our data!

We call on the FTC to immediately move forward with its Commercial Surveillance and Data Security Rulemaking, which should set strong, clear rules that limit what companies are allowed to do with our most sensitive, personal data. A new study from Consumer Reports has found that the average study participant had their data shared to Facebook by 2,230 companies – personal information such as places visited, purchases made, or events attended that most consumers have no idea is being shared. It’s time for the government to set clear, enforceable privacy rules.
