Call on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to Do its Job

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created by Congress following the devastating 2008 financial crisis that cost millions of Americans their homes, jobs, and retirement savings. Its mission is to make sure banks, lenders, and other financial companies treat consumers fairly. Since it was founded, the CFPB has returned nearly $12 billion to consumers who’ve been cheated by financial companies and stopped abusive banking, credit card, mortgage, and student loan practices.

But the future effectiveness of the CFPB is now threatened. Under new leadership, the Consumer Bureau is stepping back from its tough pursuit of wrongdoing. It has stopped investigating companies for violating the law, delayed protections for consumers from predatory practices, and made easing the rules governing banks a top priority. Put simply, they are turning the mission of the Bureau upside down. We need a strong watchdog to stand with consumers and hold banks, credit card companies, and other financial service providers accountable.

Act now to tell the Consumer Bureau’s new leadership you want the agency to maintain vigorous oversight of the financial industry so it can protect consumers from fraud and abuse.
