The potential of self-driving cars is immense. In the future, they could help make transportation safer and more convenient than ever before. But before self-driving cars end up on the market, companies should be required to show that they meet strong, reasonable safety standards. Right now, we have an opportunity to push for safe automated vehicles—or stand by as they hit our roads without basic safety features.

The Senate is considering a bill called the AV START Act. It could be our opportunity to ensure some common sense safety measures for self-driving cars. But thanks to lobbyists for the auto industry, AV START does exactly the opposite.
