Consumer Reports’ testing of canned tuna has found worrisome levels of mercury in some cans, especially albacore tuna. Since mercury is a neurotoxin that can harm a developing baby in the womb, CR experts are recommending that pregnant people avoid tuna altogether. It’s time the FDA updated its guidelines to match CR’s recommendations to better protect the developing brains and nervous systems of babies. Petition to to FDA:

We urge the FDA to update its guidelines about tuna consumption for people who are pregnant. Consumer Reports’ recent tests found concerning levels of mercury in some cans of light and albacore tuna. Since mercury can harm the brains and nervous systems of babies in the womb, the FDA should recommend that pregnant people avoid tuna altogether. It is time for the FDA to update its guidelines on tuna consumption during pregnancy, so that developing babies are not exposed to harmful levels of mercury.
