Dear Jeff Bezos:

As one of the largest companies in the world, Amazon has the resources to address the negative impacts its warehouse facilities have on local communities. I urge Amazon to commit to electrifying its heavy-duty fleet, not just its last-mile delivery vans; measure and mitigate air and water pollution, traffic and other impacts your shipping centers create; and directly engage with communities before moving in.

This is an opportunity for your company to be a leader, and contribute to the electrification of our transportation sector in the face of climate change, while mitigating harms felt by communities living near your warehouses — particularly lower-income and/or communities of color. It is long past time for the company’s leadership to match its scale.

Consumer Reports’ new examination of Amazon’s nationwide delivery network has found a disturbing trend: As Amazon rapidly opens giant warehouses across the country, the impact of increased air pollution and noise, as well as clogged roads from these sites, disproportionately falls on neighborhoods that tend to be lower-income or communities of color.

The holiday season is a perfect time to demand the world’s largest online retailer deliver environmental justice and take the necessary steps to mitigate the damage these facilities can cause. Join us in calling on Executive Chair Jeff Bezos to address the negative impacts Amazon warehouse expansion has on surrounding communities.
